Single-Payer Healthcare for All
I began my career in healthcare in 2005 when I enrolled in a career college. I completed my education with 4.0 GPA and letters of recommendation from instructors. I worked in a nonprofit teaching hospital that I also interned at as part of my education. During my time working in the healthcare field we saved many lives and also lost many lives. Unfortunately, we have a profit-driven healthcare industry that leaves millions uninsured. We are the wealthiest industrialized nation in the world that does not guarantee Universal Healthcare. Single-payer healthcare for all would guarantee no one is left uninsured providing preventative care from birth and save lives. A single-payer system puts healthcare in the hands of patient and doctor, taking the profit-driven health insurance companies out. I support single-payer healthcare and H.R. 676 because healthcare is a human right!
Tuition-Free College for All
Higher education is an essential component of any civilized and productive society. I believe that the right to pursue a college education should be available to all. We need to pass legislation that makes public colleges and universities tuition-free. In doing so, we can ensure that any person who wishes to pursue this opportunity has it available to them. A tuition-free education system could easily be paid for by reallocating a small portion of the military budget.
Current immigration laws ignore the fact that immigrants are human beings regardless of their legal status. Texas has a high population of undocumented immigrants, who are treated as second-class citizens even though they play a crucial role in our state’s economic vitality. Undocumented immigrants are subject to horrible working conditions and the lowest pay of all Texans. As your senator, I will work to pass legislation that gives undocumented immigrants a clear pathway to citizenship – without any fine print. I will also push for the simplification of the immigration process and ending immigration waitlists.
Simplifying Voter Registration
Texas’ voter registration process is outdated and discriminatory in nature. Waiting periods, inconvenient registration processes and unnecessary ID requirements discourage some potential voters from participating in the electoral process. As your senator, I will push to implement automatic voter registration with no waiting period. I will also work to expand the Voter Rights Act to include permanent residents, DACA recipients, and undocumented parents or guardians of citizen minors. Every person who contributes to our state’s vitality should be allowed to vote.
Protect the LGBTQ Community
There is still much work to be done in regards to protecting LGBTQ rights. If I’m elected, I will continually push for legislation that prevents discrimination against individuals due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This should be done at the federal level rather than the state level.
Lower the Cost of Living
Despite Republican lies, lowering the cost of living is very doable. We must aim to stop gentrification of historically working-class neighborhoods. Tax policy should be rewritten to prohibit cities from giving tax breaks and incentives to developers. These money-hungry corporations rake in huge profits by destroying low-income neighborhoods and building trendy, expensive townhomes in their place, with no regard for the people they displaced in the process. Taking steps to prevent gentrification will help curtail rising property values and ensure that working-class families won’t be pushed out of their homes. Raising the minimum wage will also help lower the cost of living. I am an avid supporter of the Fight for $15 and expanding workers’ rights.
Nationwide Basic Income
We live in one of the most prosperous nations on the planet, with a per capita annual GDP of over $57,000. However, that prosperity is rarely seen in the paychecks of working Americans. A nationwide basic income would ensure that the working class can access housing, food, and the basic utilities required to survive. A maximum personal income threshold would prevent abuse of this system.
Transition to Renewable Energy
As your senator, I will work to strengthen the EPA and pass legislation that promotes the transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources. It is common knowledge that fossil fuel production and use cause extreme damage to our planet. Little has been done to prevent oil companies from polluting the environment. We must hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for the damage they have already caused and demand investment in alternative energy sources. In a country as large as the United States, we have plenty of available space that can be used to install solar panels and wind farms.
Criminal Justice & Police Reform
The United States' criminal justice system is fueled by the profit motive. Too many people are locked up solely because they don't have the ability to pay exorbitant court costs and legal fees. Due to the profit motive playing such a large role, individuals of low socioeconomic status are incarcerated at a disproportionate rate, costing taxpayers more money. As your senator, I will work to restrict the role of private corporations in criminal justice. The most important issue, however, is combating police brutality and the targeting of African-Americans. Police violence has increased each year and if we do not push for reform, nothing will change. It should be required that all law enforcement undergo racial sensitivity training before they are handed a badge and weapon. Any officer suspected of targeting racial minorities or committing police brutality must be terminated immediately, with no exceptions.
Abolish Private Prisons
The private prison system has proven itself to be corrupt and ineffective. Prisoners who are sent to privately-run institutions are subject to horrible living conditions and mistreatment by staff. Private prisons should cease to exist. If I'm elected, I will push for legislation that prohibits further expansion of the private prison industry. No private entity should have the ability to profit off incarceration.
Decriminalize Marijuana in all 50 States & U.S. Territories
At this point, science has continually proven that the consumption of marijuana produces no adverse effects on individual health. In fact, marijuana is an excellent pain reliever and can be used for a variety of medical purposes. I support the decriminalization and subsequent legalization of marijuana throughout the United States. No young person should be thrown in jail for smoking a joint, and no cancer patient should be subject to prosecution for using marijuana to relieve pain. Legalization would bring in tax revenue and help to restrict the power of massive pharmaceutical companies, who only care about profit margins.
End the Wars & Stop Arming Terrorists
The United States is home to one of the most powerful militaries in the world. We have hundreds of military bases across the globe, which we use to constantly intervene in the foreign affairs of other countries without their request for aid. It is time to cut the military budget and bring our troops home. Arms sales to nations with corrupt governments should be prohibited.
As a representative of working-class interests, I support raising taxes on corporations and implementing higher tax rates on the top 1%. I will work to close tax loopholes and ensure that the rich are paying their fair share!
The North American Free Trade Agreement must be rewritten to be mutually beneficial for all countries involved. In its current form, NAFTA has resulted in a loss of American jobs and stagnated or reduced wages. If NAFTA is to remain in effect, it must be rewritten to promote manufacturing within the United States rather than outsourcing.
End Eminent Domain
I support ending eminent domain. Eminent domain is used by the U.S. government as an excuse to underpay property owners for their land. If the U.S. government requires privately-owned land, full market value should be paid to the property owner.
Restore Native American Rights to their Land & Honor the Treaties
Native Americans have suffered for over two centuries under U.S. government rule. To this day, Native Americans are treated as second-class citizens. Private corporations, especially alcoholic beverage manufacturers, prey on the hardship of Native American communities. As your senator, I will represent the interests of Native Americans and ensure that their voices are heard in the Senate. We must respect all treaties and Native American rights to their land. We must end the exploitation of Native Americans by corporations and work to preserve their culture and identity.
As your senator, I will work to limit corporate interference with internet access. Access to the internet should be available to all Americans at little or no cost. Internet packages cannot restrict access to websites or services.
